TAKE THE RICH OFF WELFARE
Mark Zepezauer and Arthur Naiman Real Life Series, Odonian Press ISBN 1-878825-31-3 Sick and tired of stories about dole bludgers? Tired of seeing the corporate dominated media attack those who can't defend themselves? Want to know how the rich get richer and the poor get poorer? Then this little 190 page gem is the book for you. Mark Zepezauer and Arthur Naiman use the United States governments own figures to show that the rich receive more welfare in the United States in a year than the poor receive in a decade. This meticulously researched little masterpiece fills in the gaps that surprise, surprise, the corporate media never mentions, apart from paying voluntary taxation the rich rake in welfare payments at a rate that even surprised me. The beauty about this con game is that it's legal!! legal!! legal!! The state and the corporate sector have the game sewn up. While the poor are marginalised and robbed of what little welfare payments they have, the rich are getting more and more taxpayer funded perks. The beauty of this book is that the authors have not only exposed this little scam but they have also documented their sources and they look at what the average Joe and Josephine Blow can do to force the rich off welfare and redirect taxpayer funds to meet the needs of the disadvantaged and the defenceless in the community. Although the book analyses the United States experience, the same investigative techniques could be used to document the Australian experience or for that matter the experience of any other nation state in the world. This little inexpensive Rembrant should be mandatory reading for every activist who wants to torch the belly of the beast. The incisive no nonsense approach that the authors have taken to this important topic makes this book an obligatory addition to the everyday armaments that social activists need to agitate for change.
